Netflix Show Recommendations

February 23, 2019

Dear Netflix lovers,

If you’re like me, then you watch Netflix religiously! I find it kind of crazy how as a kid the best network around was Disney Channel. Everyone watched Disney Channel. And if you’re also like me, as a kid, you probably had dreams about one day becoming a Disney Channel star. But nowadays, Disney Channel isn’t as popular as Netflix and I feel like more kids today grow up wanting to be Netflix celebrities rather than Disney stars.

Do you also remember the time when Netflix was just starting off as a streaming station? I remember all my friends had it and I still had a Blockbuster because my dad heard mixed reviews on Netflix and how it only had old TV shows and movies. Well, look at Netflix now! It has all the newest TV shows and movies, and it even creates it’s own TV shows and movies.

Now it’s all about streaming what you watch and watching it in an instant. Which I sometimes I take for granted. So I jus wanted to say I highly appreciate Netflix for satisfying my boredom and my obsession with TV.

In no particular order, here are some of the shows I highly recommend watching if you have a Netflix account!

1. Queer Eye

This was a show I completely fell in love with over the summer last year. I was recommended to watch it from a friend, who said it was about five gay men who did makeovers with hair, houses, style, food, and lifestyle. I thought it sounded interesting. So the next day I watched it. Within a week I finished both seasons! And it was worth sitting in bed all morning to binge all the episodes.

Queer eye is a show that is good for all ages and demographics. I think what really stops people from watching this show is the fact that there are five gay guys who are in it. I mean no offense in using the word gay, but just to describe who these five guys are. And just because they are gay and openly make it known on the show, they are just normal men who are helping other men, and in one case a woman, be the best they can be. It’s a show about a total transformation from how a person looks, dresses, eats, lives, and acts. Most transformation shows usually just showcases changing ones style, but I love how this show encompasses enhancing internal and external qualities.

As you continue to watch more episodes, you will feel the love come through the screen in how the fab five personally care for the person they’re helping and how they care for each other. Each episode provides a unique storyline about a person and the guys as well, which really helps you relate to them. To me, this is what I love most about the show—getting to see things from a different perspective and seeing how a person grows with the help of the fab five.

Overall, they are so fun to watch and they are such genuine beautiful souls.

If you want a good show to smile, gush, and sometimes cry with, this is the show I would recommend putting on your list.

2. One Day at a Time

Recently, I just started watching One Day at a Time and I have been loving it!

I started it about two weeks ago and probably could have finished, but I you know life sometimes responsibilities hit you in the head and you can’t do what you want *cringe*. But I’m on season two and I can GENUINELY say that this is one of the BEST shows I have watched in such a long time.

I’m not the type of person who likes to watch funny sitcoms, so I was very hesitant to watch this at first. But then I was looking for a new show to watch and I remember seeing commercials about One Day at a Time on the Netflix newsfeed sites, so I clicked on it. The first episode for me was kind of slow and hard to get into and I kept thinking that this show was boring and I wasn’t going to like it. But then the show progressed and it was just sooooo good!!!!

I have never laughed so hard or tired so much from watching a show. Each episode got funnier and funnier and I loved the different topics that each episode covered with sexism, religion, depression, PTSD, sexuality and coming out, immigration, being of a different culture or race and most importantly what it means to be a strong single mother raising her kids after coming back from Afghanistan. I loved how this show created such a balance between humor and important topics; it’s just so thought provoking and heartwarming.

I loved the episode where the Grandma, Lydia, made Elena wear makeup but then she took it off. Then they both bonded over their own comfortability and what made them feel powerful, whether it be wearing makeup or not. I adored the Season 1 finale and again that balance of humor and heart-clenching moments. I recently watched an episode called Hello, Penelope and I honestly was just wallowing in my tears because of how much it hit home to me. And to just watch something that made me laugh and made me cry, but feel that connection all at once is the beauty of this show. It’s the kind of show that will make you laugh until you cry and cry until you laugh; it fixes pain with laughter and laughter through the pain. Netlflix hasn’t confirmed a season 4 and I will be HEARTBROKEN if I don’t get to see another day with Penelope, Schider, Alex, Elena, and, my absolute favorite, Lydia. This is just such a fun, simple, and all around good time!Honestly, a highly underrated show that needs more love and appreciation.

3. The Good Place

The Good Place

The Good Place is a CBS original comedy, but I watched the first two seasons on Netflix, so it’s on the Netflix list!

The Good Place is about a woman named Eleanor who passes away and has gone to the “good place” or what people imagine as a heaven with bright light and unlimited frozen yogurt. In the good place, you live in your dream house with your soul mate to spend the rest of your days with. Eleanor lives next door to a posh English woman named Tihani, who’s soul mate is a monk named Jason. All might seem right in the world, except the fact that Eleanor is not supposed to be in the good place.

So all throughout the show, she tries to prove that she’s good and that she can change by learning ethics lessons from her “soul mate” Chidi. Chidi knows and is harboring her secret.

This show is a bunch of laughs and other things. It’s better if you go into this show knowing the bear minimum so you won’t have that much expectations or opinions. But it’s so worth the watch!

4. Nailed It!

I, myself, am a baker. I’m I the best baker? No. Do I consider myself a decent baker? Most of the time. But Nailed It! takes moderate bakers to make extravagant creations all within a time limit.

I love watching the bakers turn the highly detailed and polished treats into disasters! I’m always laughing and smiling whenever I watch this show because it’s just so relatable because we’ve all had our baking fails. Sometimes I catch myself when I laugh because I know I shouldn’t be laughing at these people when I probably couldn’t have baked or decorated those treats any better. So I give all the contests on Nailed It! credit for trying in the first place.

5. You

This is your creepy, dark, twisted, maniacal Dan Humphrey dreams.

Penn Badgley plays a book store worker named Joe, or as Peach calls Joesph, who he meets blonde haired beauty named Beck. Beck is a college student who wants to be a writer. She has a very open social life —-and an open window ; ) —-and lots of social lite friends like Peach, Annika, and Lynn.

After meeting Beck, Joe becomes obsessive with her—stalking her social media, stalking her house, stalking her at school, and stalking her at clubs. He’s everywhere! And he’s obsessed with the idea that they would make a great couple and that she loves him—-that he could be the man she needs.

I had the chills watching this show! Each episode dives in deeper into Joe’s obsession and the things he risks doing all for the sake of his love for Beck and what he thinks is best for her. And gosh he’s a creepy sick weirdo! I can’t even explain my disgust, my revulsion, my hesitancy, my intrigue, and my understanding of Joe.

I’m not saying it’s a bad show; I’m saying Joe is a bad person in the most entertaining way. If that interests you, you should watch You.

6. Sugar Rush

Another baking show to satisfy my baking dreams.

Sugar Rush is about contestants who undergo three rounds of baking where they make a treat, a confection, and a cake. They have a set amount of time for the first two rounds for treats and a confection and anytime left over is added to the three hour cake round. The idea is to spilt up the beginning time evenly so that both treats get done in two hours and that leaves you another hour for the cake round.

It’s all about a rush against the clock.

I really enjoyed the baking and the creations that these bakers created. I just love watching all the sweets I dream of eating myself. Maybe that’s why I like baking shows so much ; )

But one thing I found a bit weird on this show was that they didn’t eliminate anyone until everyone was done with the first round and the judges decided. It was kind of unfair because some groups would finish early and would already start on their second round and then other groups would follow and start on the second round too. If the last group finished much later and the judges decided that the first group they tested from was eliminated, that’s not fair to the first group because they already started their second round and probably was close to being done. I think that the players should be able to stop their time after the first round and clean up or something as the other groups finish. Then when everyone is done, the judges can eliminate so it’s fair to the groups.

Then the stopped time can start up again in the second round.

That’s my only critique of the show, but nevertheless I found it enjoyable.

7. Alexa and Katie

If you want a quick, simple, fun show with teenagers, this show really fits what you’re looking for.

Alexa is a girl who is just starting high school, but she has cancer. Her family is nothing but supportive, but her true support and love lies in Katie, her best friend. Katie defines what it means to be a best friend, as does Alexa. Both girls would go to the ends of the earth to do something for each other or to make one feel less awkward or alone. I really loved the friendship and the plot in the show.

There are more titles that I could have added to this list, but I think I’ll save those titles for a different day because most of them are CW shows.

If you liked any of these shows, what were your thoughts of it? If you didn’t, what were your critiques? If you have any recommendations for me to watch, please feel free to list them below.

Gosh knows, I only need to watch more TV ; )

I hope you have a beautiful day! And don’t stay in front of the screen the whole time.

As always, with love,
