Books With Loveable McNerds

May 20, 2020

To all my McNerds, so what is a McNerd you may ask? Well, the first time I heard the term McNerd it was when I read the Unexpected Everything by Morgan Watson, which I’ll get more into later with this post, but it is basically a hot nerd. And for me, I never been opposed to the term nerd because honestly if you want to shade me by calling me someone who is smart, then by all means do sošŸ˜† Being a nerd doesn’t have to be a bad thing and I think the media has made being a nerd as so, but trust me it’s not.

Because us nerds are making a comeback into the mainstream and we will pop off on all those who ever thought we weren’t good enough. So a nerd who is hot is a McNerd. I don’t know why, but it just is. And I LOVE me a McNerd because I am one. But there’s just something also highly, dare I say it, attractive for a person who is hot and who has a brain. Now, don’t get me wrong, hotness is subjective so everyone who has a brain is hot in his/her way, but you know, sometimes McNerds have that McNerdness about them and you just know they are one.

For me, it’s the person who has the wireframe glasses, has good style, and is secretly sporting an athletic side behind all those brains.

And when you see or read about a McNerd, YOU’LL KNOW šŸ˜‰

So if you’re like me and you like McNerds or are one, these are books I recommend for either strong male or female McNerd leads šŸ’•

If I’m Being Honest by Emily Wibberly and Austin Siegemund-Broka

McNerd: Barfy Brendan aka. Brendan

Glasses: No

Style: Debatable

Status: Loves computer programming, Zelda, and school

Best quality: Has SUCH a good sense of humor

Synopsis

High school senior Cameron Brightā€™s reputation can be summed up in one word: bitch. Itā€™s no surprise sheā€™s queen bee at her private L.A. high schoolā€”sheā€™s beautiful, talented, and notorious for her cutting and brutal honesty. So when she puts her foot in her mouth in front of her crush, Andrew, she fears she may have lost him for good.

In an attempt to win him over, Cameron resolves to ā€œtameā€ herself, much like Katherine in Shakespeareā€™s The Taming of the Shrew. First, sheā€™ll have to make amends with those sheā€™s wronged, which leads her to Brendan, the guy she labelled with an unfortunate nickname back in the sixth grade. At first, Brendan isnā€™t all that receptive to Cameronā€™s ploy. But slowly, he warms up to her when they connect over the computer game heā€™s developing. Now if only Andrew would noticeā€¦

But the closer Cameron gets to Brendan, the more she sees he appreciates her personalityā€”honesty and allā€”and wonders if sheā€™s compromising who she is for the guy she doesnā€™t even want.

The Unexpected Everything by Morgan Matson

McNerd: Clark

( I mean, he sounds like a McNerd)

Glasses: Heck Yea!

Style: You Bet!

Status: Loves his secrets, notorious for writing, and has a fashion style that slaps.

Best quality: Ladies and gents we have a dog lover!

Synopsis

Andie had it all planned out. When you are a politicianā€™s daughter whoā€™s pretty much raised yourself, you learn everything can be planned or spun, or both. Especially your future. Important internship? Check. Amazing friends? Check. Guys? Check (as long as weā€™re talking no more than three weeks).

But that was before the scandal. Before having to be in the same house with her dad. Before walking an insane number of dogs. That was before Clark and those few months that might change her whole life. Because hereā€™s the thingā€”if everythingā€™s planned out, you can never find the unexpected. And whereā€™s the fun in that?

The Mortal Instrument Series

McNerd: Simon Lewis

Glasses: It comes on and off šŸ˜‰

Style: If you say so

Status: Loves being in semi-successful boybands, loves his gaming, and prone to not sparkling in the sunlight.

Best quality: He’s loyal through and through

Synopsis

When Clary Fray heads out to the Pandemonium Club in New York City, she hardly expects to witness a murderā€”much less a murder committed by three teenagers covered with strange tattoos and brandishing bizarre weapons. And sheā€™s more than a little startled when the body disappears into thin air. Soon Clary is introduced to the world of the Shadowhunters, a secret cadre of warriors dedicated to driving demons out of our world and back to their own. And Clary is introduced with a vengeance, when her mother disappears and Clary herself is almost killed by a grotesque monster. How could a mere human survive such an attack and kill a demon? The Shadowhunters would like to knowā€¦

Yes No Maybe So by Aisha Saeed and Becky Albertalli

McNerd: Jamie Goldberg

Glasses: I wish šŸ˜†

Style: He got that Target look

Status: Highly awkward, massive over thinker, loves the Target patio section, known for vomiting on bosses, and the creator of the one of the kind “slowmance.”

Best Quality: A loving brother and (not so) chill friend.

Synopsis

YES

Jamie Goldberg is cool with volunteering for his local state senate candidateā€”as long as heā€™s behind the scenes. When it comes to speaking to strangers (or, letā€™s face it, speakingĀ at allĀ to almost anyone) Jamieā€™s a choke artist. Thereā€™s no way heā€™d ever knock on doors to ask people for their votesā€¦until he meets Maya.Ā

NO

Maya Rehmanā€™s having the worst Ramadan ever. Her best friend is too busy to hang out, her summer trip is canceled, and now her parents are separating. Why her mother thinks the solution to her problems isĀ political canvassingā€”with some awkward dude she hardly knowsā€”is beyond her.Ā

MAYBE SO

Going door to door isnā€™t exactly glamorous, but maybeĀ itā€™s not the worst thing in the world. After all, the polls are getting closerā€”and so are Maya and Jamie. Mastering local activism is one thing. Navigating the cross-cultural crush of the century is another thing entirely.

Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell

McNerd: Cath

Glasses: For all the time she spends typing?

Style: Simply cute

Status: Loves Simon Snow and creating fictional worlds

Best Quality: Passionate and compassionate

Synopsis

Reading. Rereading. Hanging out in Simon Snow forums, writing Simon Snow fan fiction, dressing up like the characters for every movie premiere.

Cath’s sister has mostly grown away from fandom, but Cath can’t let go. She doesn’t want to.
Now that they’re going to college, Wren has told Cath she doesn’t want to be roommates. Cath is on her own, completely outside of her comfort zone. She’s got a surly roommate with a charming, always-around boyfriend, a fiction-writing professor who thinks fan fiction is the end of the civilized world, a handsome classmate who only wants to talk about words . . . And she can’t stop worrying about her dad, who’s loving and fragile and has never really been alone.

For Cath, the question is: Can she do this?

Can she make it without Wren holding her hand? Is she ready to start living her own life? Writing her own stories?

And does she even want to move on if it means leaving Simon Snow behind?

The Replacement Crush by Lisa Brown Roberts

Operation Replacement Crush is in full effect. And Dallas is determined to take her heart off the shelf.

The Bookworm Crush by Lisa Brown Roberts

McNerd: Amy

Status: Notorious for knitting and reading. She’s no newbie to book face.

Best Quality: When you get to know her, she can surprise you with her spunk.

Synopsis

Shy bookworm Amy McIntyre is about to compete for the chance to interview her favorite author, who hasn’t spoken to the press in years. The only way to win is to step out of the shadows and into the spotlight, but that level of confidence has never come easy.

The solution? A competition coach. The problem? The best person for the job is the guy she’s secretly crushing onā€¦local surfer celebrity Toff Nichols.

Heā€™s a player. Heā€™s a heartthrob. He makes her forget basic things, like how to breathe. How can she feel any confidence around him?

To her surprise, Toff agrees to help. And heā€™s an excellent teacher. Amy feels braverā€”maybe even brave enough to admit her feelings for him. When their late night practices become less about coaching and more about making out, Amyā€™s newfound confidence wavers.

But does Toff really like her or is this just another lesson?

Adorkable by Cookie O’ Gorman

McNerd: Sally

Glasses: She don’t got em’

Style: Casual chic

Status: Loves pretending she’s in love with her best friend when she actually is.

Best Quality: She’s an A+ actress šŸ˜‚

Synopsis

Adorkable (ah-dor-kuh-bul): Descriptive term meaning to be equal parts dorky and adorable. For reference, see Sally Spitz.

Seventeen-year-old Sally Spitz is done with dating. Or at least, she’s done with the horrible blind dates/hookups/sneak attacks her matchmaking bestie, Hooker, sets her up on. There’s only so much one geek girl and Gryffindor supporter can take.

Her solution: She needs a fake boyfriend. And fast.

Enter Becks, soccer phenom, all-around hottie, and Sally’s best friend practically since birth. When Sally asks Becks to be her F.B.F. (fake boyfriend), Becks is only too happy to be used. He’d do anything for Salā€•even if that means giving her PDA lessons in his bedroom, saying she’s “more than pretty,” and expertly kissing her at parties.

The problem: Sally’s been in love with Becks all her lifeā€•and he’s completely clueless.

This book features two best friends, one special-edition Yoda Snuggie, countless beneath-the-ear kisses, and begs the question:

Who wants a real boyfriend when faking it is so much more fun?

Harriet Manners is a geek. She always has been, and she thought she always would beā€”but when she’s discovered by a modeling agent, she leaps at the chance to reinvent herself.

There’s only one problem: Harriet is the definition of awkward. Can she transform from geek to chic?
