Books That Would Make Great Television + Films

July 18, 2020

To the bibliophile at heart, if there’s one thing I love more than books, family, and food, it’s good TV. I mean, is there anything better than sitting down on a warm, cozy day, or a bright, clear day and just watching a compelling show?

The answer is absolutely not.

I find that as time goes on, more producers or show runners or whoever makes TV shows have been using books as inspiration, which, if you ask me is one of the SMARTEST ideas a producer or show runner can do. The content and the world is already set up for you there and all you have to do is buy the rights, adapt it truthfully, and then bam you have a hit show and you monetize off of it. Not that money should be the key factor into making a TV show, but sadly, money drives a lot of things in today’s world.

But I recently watched the queen of booktube herself, Christine Riccio’s, video below, which really inspired this post.

I honestly loved all that she discussed in this book was going to do one long blog post of what I think would make amazing TV shows, but then I got to thinking that I have A LOT. So I wanted to split this up between contemporary and fantasy/sci-fi books that I think would make stellar TV shows, so if you like this post, my fantasy/sci-fi one will be out shortly 😊

I just wanted to start by saying though, that any and all books deserve to be a TV show because all writers have such amazing imaginations as to make a book come to life in the way that they have. And all books bring something beautiful and fun to the table that I think people would love to watch, so I’m really rooting for all authors that one day they get the screen time they deserve if that is what the author wants for his/her book. Also, I’m not saying that none of these books shouldn’t become movies, because book to movie adaptations are amazing too and I love them, but with movies, there’s only so much that they put in that you don’t really get the full story that you fall in love with. With a series, there is more time for screen writers and producers or whoever makes TV (sorry, I’m not well-versed in the entertainment industry πŸ˜…) to delve deeper into characters or plot developments that they can’t when they have a two hour crunch limit with a movie. So I love the way TV shows can add onto a story and make it full or make you see more to the story then what you get. One of the things Christine brought up in her video that I really found myself liking and agreeing to was how she said that she likes when TV shows add to the book. When she said that, I really liked that because sure I like watching book to TV show adaptations because it’s longer and you get to see more of the world and the characters, but I think part of me also kind of liked that we got to see the depth too. I just never put it in that way before as to say it contributed more to the overall story.

So TV shows, I think, sound like the best option when it comes to book adaptations. And gosh knows there are soooooo many books out there that can and should become a TV show.

Here are some of mines:

Oh and P.S. Sorry if some of the pictures are blurry, I tried to find the best high quality pictures I can πŸ˜…

Authors

Stephanie Perkins Books

If there’s any contemporary series that I can already imagine as a cute Netflix show, it’s Stephanie Perkins books.

This kind of goes off of what Christine said in how Rainbow Rowell books could also be a TV show and how someone could interweave all the characters and plots to collide and mesh nicely. With Anna, Lola, and Isla, their books already naturally mesh and I think that it would be so easy to make a romantic, cute, and lovable series out of this. I think everyone can find a character to resonate with in Anna, Lola, and Isla. There all very different girls and these books take place in very different places, so I think it would also make for such a fun series to travel to different places and to see how all these characters find themselves and fall in love.

Sandhya Menon Books

Kind of like Stephanie Perkins books, I think that Sandhya Menon books would also make for such a diverse, fun, cultural experience. What I love about Sandhya Menon’s books is the diversity it brings with its characters and how all the girls bring something unique to the table with their personalities and storylines. I think When Dimple Met Rishi and There’s Something About Sweetie mesh better because There’s Something About Sweetie stems from When Dimple Met Rishi. The next book coming out from Sandhya, Ten Things to Hate About Pinky also stems from There’s Something About Sweetie, so that works too. Overall, I think that since the world sounds very similar and the characters are very connected, it would make for an interesting series to expand on and see more of these characters.

With When Dimple Met Rishi, I think people will enjoy the arranged marriage plot and overall cuteness. With There’s Something About Sweetie, it will challenge a lot of body image perceptions, which is such a pertinent topic in todays world that needs to be discussed and showcased in the media more. I know There’s Something About Sweetie really altered my view in the best way and is one of my favorite reads this year. From, Twinkle With Love can also be easily weaved into these two world, and maybe Dimple and Sweetie can bring out the best in Twinkle. Maybe all three girls will be friends one day and go to each other’s weddings and it would be the cutest thing ever!

Just imagine πŸ’ž

Rick Riodan Books

I HIGHLY agree with Christine that the Percy Jackson series and the Hero of Olympics, or any of Rick Riodans books can make for good television.

Unpopular opinion, but I actually enjoyed the Percy Jackson movies. And before you judge me, just know when I watched both movies, I hadn’t read any of the books yet, so to me it was actually interesting movies that I liked πŸ˜†. But that’s because I like Greek mythology and I thought the plot was the first of its kind when the movie came out. So that’s why I liked it so much.

But after reading the books, I can understand why people thought the movies were cringe worthy and ever since then I always thought to myself that the movies should get redone as a series. Disney was kind of going on a low time shows and I’m a big fan of Disney and just want the best for them, so I thought, since it’s Disney Hyperion books, Disney should make a show of it. And what do you know? All these years later, apparently these books are actually being worked on to become a series on Disney+, which I am HERE for.

To me, I think that this is such a smart move as to have this streaming service and to finally invest in Rick Riodan’s books. I think this time around, Disney should age down the characters and have them grow up on the show as Christine said, and the show should be as faithful to the books in a fun, adventurous, and humorous way. If the show does this, I think kids will relate to it and like it a lot more.

And who knows, maybe more of Rick Riodan’s books can also become series too

Series

The Selection

So, if you haven’t heard the news, The Selection is getting a TV show on Netflix, and rightfully so! I know it will be HIGHLY POPULAR with people because it literally is a cross between the Bachelor/Bachorlette and Princesses. And I think in recent years, the Bachelor/Bachorlette has blown up in popularity for some reason, which means it’s the prime time for The Selection to debut as a series because it will be highly successful. I also think it will do well because there’s a niche to be filled for princesses and the royal life because what person also doesn’t love the whole idea of royalty.

As much as I am excited for The Selection to be turned into a show, it’s one of those series that holds a special place in my heart and I would dislike it if anyone did The Selection a disservice or injustice to the beauty of what the books were. It’s scary because, obviously, with books that get turned into film and TV shows, not all of them turn out to be great because they stray sooooo far from the original plot of the story and things get messy. And the story becomes so unrecognizable from the book we fell in love with. And I would really not like to see that with such a beautifully written story. But I’m definitely going to be watching it for sure! Just scared.

What this show would need to be successful though is good casting and staying very truthful to the plot. I would also like to explore more in depth about Aspen and Celeste’s backstory because I think they were very interesting characters that you don’t really get to fully know within this series. So maybe we can delve into that. We can also focus on the other girls in the selection as well as Maxon’s family dynamic and maybe his backstory. I think there is so much room for lots of story growth as well as romance, royalty, and love.

But really what is needed is to stay true to the books roots πŸ’™

Vampire Academy and Bloodlines

Most of us has probably seen the Vampire Academy movie with Zoey Deutch, Lucy Fry, Danilla, and Dominic Sherwood. I remember when I saw the trailer for Vampire Academy, I couldn’t care less and thought it was very clichΓ©d and awkward looking. Keep in mind, I saw the trailer before I ever knew about the series or read the books. So as an outsider looking in, I was not impressed.

Once I read the books and watched the movie, I can say the movie was pretty decent, but it grazed over sooooo many key aspects to Vampire Academy that would have really amped it up.

I also thought that the first movie was like dipping a toe into the water with the series because it didn’t go into depth about the world so much as ease into it. The book series truly does get better over time and it builds up the world and characters. So if there was a TV show, it could really delve deeper into everything and set the stage for a worlf people would fall in love with like I did.

There’s also such a niche to fill for vampire TV because Vampire Diaries is over and Twilight is over, so I think we need to re-vamp (see what I did there πŸ˜‰) vampires and their world and I can definitely see a comeback with this.

The casting for the movie, in my opinion, was kind of spot on. I really liked Lucy Fry, Zoey Duetch, Dominic, Cameron Monaghan (who played Mason), but I especially loved Danilla. Sure, Danilla was a bit older to play Dimitri, but you can’t say Danilla wasn’t the spitting image of what you imagined Dimitri to be. Or Camreon for that matter. He made a really good Mason. I wouldn’t be made if they reprised their roles.

But I really believe Vampire Academy is a HIGHLY underrated series because it’s BEYONG AMAZING. And I mean that A LOT. And the movie would have done better if it stayed more true to the book and if it was marketed in the right way. Because again, even when I saw the trailer, I was turned off and I didn’t know what it was, so if I was turned off, others surely had to be. There also wasn’t a lot of publicity for it, so maybe that had to do with it’s flop. If at the time, it came out as a Netflix movie, I think it would have done better because, let’s be honest, no one goes to the movie theater as much unless it’s for a big movie like Frozen or Star Wars.

Vampire Academy has soooooo much room to be successful and I really can’t wait for the day when someone picks it up and is like, I can make this something big. Because it truly can be ❀️

Oh, and also, if this were to become a series, I think it would do well to also mesh it with Bloodlines or do a spin off with Bloodlines because gosh knows that was another amazing series. I mean, we have to see Sydney and Adrian, and Lisa’s cousin who’s name I can’t remember at the moment because it’s been so long. But you know who I’m talking about if you read the books.

Honestly, Richelle Mead needs more love and credit!

Burn For Burn

Jenny Han is really riding the success train recently and I don’t think it will let up. I’m here for an author’s success and Jenny deserves it alongside Siobhan Vivian.

The Burn For Burn series isn’t really that popular, but it really gives me Pretty Little Liars and a little bit of Nancy Drew vibes that I believe would also do well on the screen. I think people will fall in love with Lilia, Kat, and Amy and the uniqueness of all three of the girls.

There can also be depth explored with each character. With Lilia we can explore her Asian background and her upbringing with uptight parents. With Kat, we can understand her more if we touch on her upbringing and her current choices. But Amy’s the real interesting one we can really look into.

Alice in Zombieland

Another highly underrated series that I fell in love with. Again, there would be a niche for this series because I think this would be like a girly version of the Walking Dead.

I say girlier, not to be sexist, but I think the Alice in Wonderland aspect really is what makes it a bit more feminine in the way the Alice in Wonderland storyline is, but I believe that Disney fans of the story will find a twist that they never knew they needed and will love if they saw this series come to life. I know I loved it and I wasn’t that huge of a stan for Alice in Wonderland. I liked the Tim Burton movies, but imagine the zombies, the gor, the love.

It would be epic, magical, and overall a spell-binding time.

LUX

Someone truly should make this a TV show because how amazing would it be?!

I think there’s shows called the Alien or Alienated or some space shows out there already, but I don’t think any would be as inttriguing and dynamic as the LUX series.

And that’s saying a lot from someone who doesn’t typically read nor like sci-fi books!

I’m serious.

I was so nervous going into this series because I don’t like sci-fi, but I LOVED this series. After I read LUX, I was more open to read sci-fi, but have never found something as close to the feeling LUX gave me.

There’s something so realatble with Kat and something so hot in Damon and Dee and everyone will fall in love with the whole plot because it’s 1) funny 2) steamy 3) creepy in a good way 4) chilling and 5) dramatic.

That’s like the recipe for the perfect TV show in this day and age.

And the casting . . .

OOOOOOH if they did the casting right, then they have my heart

For Damon, I’m kind of imagining like a younger Tyler Hoelchin. Tyler Posey would also do if he was scruffy. Someone who has the look, if you know what I mean ladies and gents 😏

Divergent

It’s no secret that the Divergent book to movie adaptation was kind of a big old flop. I mean they didn’t even give us an Allegiant part 2 no matter how bad part 1 was.

I can say that the first movie was good in the way that I thought it was kind of faithful to the book, but it was like the writers and directors went on a zipline because everything went down from that and I can get into that in another blog post. But suffice to say, the movies started to deviate too much from the books that I knew and loved and after that it was really hard to enjoy the movies and to see the books as I read them. And that’s what sucks with book to movie adaptations that aren’t the best, is that if the adaptation sucks, it kind of ruins that image and good memory of the book in your head.

Kind of like Christine said with Harry Potter, that one day someone’s going to make it a series to dive more into the world, which I think is kind of a really smart idea. But I also think one day, someone should revisit Divergent and make it a series that is honest to the book . I think that if done right, with actors who are the appropriate age, then it could be successful.

However, I think Divergent was done in the right time because dystopian movies and books aren’t all the hype nowadays, so I think the series would also have to come at the right time too. But there would be so much we can explore with the factions, the lifestyle and background of all the characters, and more Tris and Four. I think it would be amazing to see that.

Legend

Marie Lu should get some hype too!

She created a series that’s also a good dystopian and like Divergent, when the times right for dystopian books to be adapted, I think someone should consider Legend. It would go along with being more inclusive since Day is Asian, but it would also be interesting to see more of the world and characters. I can’t say every detail from this series is clear to me because it’s been YEARS since I read this series, but I know it’s good enough with a lot of action and romance to make good television that people will chew up.

Throne of Glass

No duh this would be on my list too! πŸ˜†

I legit think someone is going to make this a series one day and I heard someone also already bought the rights, so they better have a big budget and creative directors because this is a tall order and needs a big cup to fill.

This is another series I’m scared to have adapted because it holds a special place in my heart as one of my top fantasy reads. There’s so much world building, characters, and dynamics that goes on in this series that it would have to be done justice as authentically as possible to be successful.

I can already see the glass castle, the outfits that would be worn, the fighting scenes, and the wyverns, and witches. It’s sooooo exciting to think about it in such a big light because Sarah J Maas deserves to have her words come to life because her creativity is something that shouldn’t be contained to just words, but to life.

If we’re being honest, of course, this series give me Game of Thrones vibes, but the Throne of Glass series is dompetlely different if you ask me. But maybe you shouldn’t ask me because I’m the 0.0000000000009% who’s never watched Game of Thrones and don’t judge me. I was barely old enough to watch a rated PG-13 movie when this series started, so what makes you think I was going to watch it. Sure, I could have watched it later, but by that time, other shows came out and Game of Thrones wasn’t my priority. Doesn’t mean I don’t think GoT isn’t a good TV show, I just can’t fully claim to saying that.

Sorry for my tangent, but a big company like Netflix, Apple TV, or HBO should produce ToG. I don’t think HBO would though because GoT came from that network and it would be too close to home. But other providers could and I think it would help grow their name in the best way possible.

Any tv provider should be honored if ToG grazes their network.

A Court of Thorns and Roses

Sarah J Maas books hold a special place in my heart and I’m scared if this series will also not be done right.

I would LOVE to see this as a series too and I can see it meshing well with the ToG series, but I think that ToG is kind of a big world within itself, so it might be too much to include ACOTAR’s world in it too, so maybe a spin off would be more like it.

But again, such a beautifully written story that I think everyone will fall in love with especially with the Beauty and Beast retelling of sorts and the fae aspect—–two hot topics on TV these days.

I don’t want to give anything away about the books themselves, but the things that happen will surely keep people on their toes in the best way too. I know it had me hooked from the get go.

Also kind of like with the Selection, this series holds a special place in my heart, so I would love to see it done justice to how well-written and crafted this series was.

The Lunar Chronicles

If I’m being honest, I’m scared as to whoever buys the rights to this series because it does hold a special place in my heart and I would hate for anyone to ruin such a beautiful storyline.

Kind of like a Once Upon A Time vibe, but with a sci-fi element and I think people would LOVE that. I know I loved the books for those things.

The books would also mesh well season wise because the characters can be introduced with each season or along one season that might lead up to more things along the way. I think it would be cool if all the characters were introduced in the beginning and then you see along the way their stories and how they work or interweave together to the end goal of what happens in Winter. Or the series could be done as the books are intended with each season a different character focus, but like in a backstory way that might parallel to what’s going on now in their world. Again, like a Once Upon A Time format.

Marissa Meyers kind of already outlines the whole series with her books that I think it would be easy for someone to put it on a screen.

The Renegades

Superheroes are all the buzz these days too. So of course the Renegades would make excellent TV.

The thing that would make the Renegades stand out would be how it’s not exactly like Marvel or DC, but it’s own little world that comic book fans wouldn’t know and will be able to find surprises in. I think comic book fans will be like, “Oh, this is like wannabe superheroes and those superheroes copy others,” and blah blah blah blah blah. But all superheroes across any universe—-Marvel or DC—-have a similar superhero with a similar power, so don’t go roasting on the Renegades.

I really think that there’s something special here because you get a perspective from Adrian, a really good guy, and Nova, a really lost girl, who’s bad, but I know deep down is good. I think people will be able to see through Nova and will root for her goodness kind of like Lena Luther on Supergirl. I also think the romance add something heavy and fun to it too.

So if anyone wants to make a popping superhero show with a plot and with characters never seen before, this would be the strong basis as where to start.

Shatter Me

Tahereh Mafi really has my whole heart with her writing πŸ’™. Her words, her world, everything.

She’s also someone who is highly deserving of her words coming to life and it would make for such a compelling, brilliant TV series.

There’s so much depth and screwed up-ness that comes with this series that it really will leave people wanting to watch more. There’s also a superhero aspect to these books that has also never been done before, that I think people will learn to appreciate.

More recently with her from Restore Me onwards, there is sooooo much more bozonker things that goes down that would make for crazy TV. I really think there’s something special to be created here if done right.

I can already imagine people having a love hate relationship with Warner, secretly rooting for Adam, laughing with Kenji, and cheering on Juliette. I can also imagine people’s jaws dropping to the floor because that’s how good Tahereh Mafi’s writing is.

Red Queen

You see, I read Red Queen and started Glass Sword, but wasn’t a big fan of this series. Not that the writing is bad or that it’s not a good series, because Victoria Aveyard is an excellent writer, just I didn’t click with the series and I’m not going to force myself to read it if I didn’t fully like it.

Again, nothing against the writing or the author, just not my speed.

But doesn’t mean, I don’t think it won’t make good TV. Based on the plot and the world I got from the first book, there’s so much to be explored and I can only imagine what else might be crazy good as the series goes on. I think I might try to reread the first and get through the second book again one day to see what actually happened. But I don’t think right now is the time for me to try again.

The covers are beautiful and they kind of hint at the epicness that can come from this series being a TV show, so I’m really rooting for it.

The Raven Boys

Kind of another underrated series. Not really my most favorite series either, but I think it would make for great television too. This series gives me a Charmed vibe that I think would draw in a more male audience, but girls can also be drawn if the casting of al the boys is attractive enough πŸ˜†

I think the series could add romance to make it more appealing to the audience, but there’s also something unique to be explored here.

Shopaholic

This would probably be one of the most relatable series in knowing most of us have a shopaholic in us. I know I do πŸ˜‚

I think this would make a great Amazon Prime or a cute, cheesy, Netflix comedy that fans would simply love with its humor, relatability and it’s honest to gosh down to earh-ness.

Becky Bloomwood has such a bold personality and life that people would love to watch and see. Kind of gives me the Nanny vibes with Fran Drescher, so it would be such fun show.

One of Us is Lying

I recently read One of Us is Lying, and it gives me serious TV hit vibes. Mystery, intrigue, twists, and other thoughts. I don’t really want to spoil the plot of the book or one of the key factors, but if you read the book you would kind of know what I’m talking about.

But this series would be like a Riverdale met Pretty Little Liars met 13 Reasons Why. All are excellent TV shows, so that’s why I think a One of Us TV show would do so well. I think the CW could benefit well off of a show like this or maybe Netflix too.

Mara Dyer

There would be such a niche with this show. I mean, there is no other show that I think would be quite like the Mara Dyer series and this show can also have a continuation with Noah Shaw and his story with the Shaw Chronicles, so it’s like Michelle Hodkins is screaming screenwriters and producers to produce this because it could be done so well and it would do so good. If there’s one show that I think might compare quite like Mara Dyer, it might be the new Nancy Drew series, but I haven’t watched it yet, so I don’t fully know.

But we can fully explore Mara’s life more and what happened with her and Jude and we can also delve into Noah’s backstory. There’s so much depth to all these characters and the whole story within itself, that it would really make for chilling, humorous, and dark fun.

Stand Alone Books Books

My True Love Gave To Me

I’m writing this post when it’s the holiday season, so naturally this book would be on here. I truly do believe that this would also make good television as a twelve episode Christmas series. It would be super cute and they can all intertwine at the end for a special episode.

But I think Netflix is really on a holiday kick with its content, so I think Netflix would do well with making this a series for Christmas that everyone can find a story or episode to love.

Ten Blind Dates

Another holiday book that would be easy to set up as a series. Each episode could be a blind date that leads up to Sophie’s ultimate choice. I can just imagine the beginning episode where it sets up the whole series and then ends with the chart being made and then with each episode, there can be a new guy, lots of laughter, and lots of family love.

It would be a really cute series, that I know I would watch for sure!

Turtles All the Way Down

I don’t have a Hulu, but I’ve been hearing nothing but good things about Looking for Alaska, so I feel like Turtles All the Way Down would make another good adaptation. I also think the topic of anxiety and spiraling thoughts will also resonate a lot with people, especially these days, where a lot of people, sadly, do have anxiety and spiraling thoughts. I know that I can find myself thinking too much and it feels suffocating int hose thoughts, and I don’t think there is a show that does those topics justice. But Turtles All the Way Down definitely does and John Green is a name people would love to hear and watch.

I’ll Give You the Sun

Jandy Nelson’s another underrated author. She’s actually a highly acclaimed writer in the YA world, whom I find a lot of other authors want to live up to.

I’ll say I like Jandy Nelson and her writing, but this wasn’t my favorite book in the world, but I know people will love it as a TV show because it would touch people’s hearts in all the right ways.

John Green had his shot as a literary writer who had his work adapted and people fell in love with him, so I think Jandy Nelson deserves some of that love.

Anyway, those are all the books that I feel would make the BEST television and I have no doubt in my mind that one day I believe that these books will get picked up. I just hope that they are all done authentically, truthfully, and with so much love and care because it’s not only respectful to honor the work of the author and the words and world that he/she created, but it’s also important to honor the memory of the reader. The reader is the people who fall in love with the work that was created and who will ultimately be watching these TV shows and they don’t want to watch something that completely strays from what we know and love. As a fellow reader, I know I don’t like it when a series does that because then it tarnishes what I know of the book because of how badly I view the show. So adaptations have to be done write and it has to be a collaboration with the author as well. I feel like if the author isn’t included in that process, that’s when the story is out of their hand and out of their control. And I think if someone told the author they can’t have a say, they know that they are going to be changing things up so much that part of them doesn’t want the author to know that and to shake their head in shame at what their work is becoming. So collaboration is key with adpataiotn.

I probably didn’t list all the books that deserve to be as series, so what books do you think would make good television? Any books I mentioned that you agree or disagree with? Let me know below in the comments as I love hearing from you all πŸ’•

I hope you have a beautiful day whenever and wherever you might be reading this.

And as always, with love,

Pastel New Sig
